For most architectural, outdoor, and consumer-facing jobs, the final step is a coating — and powder coating is the most popular choice for good reason. It’s tough, it’s available in almost any colour, and it gives metal a clean, professional finish that lasts.

What is powder coating?

Powder coating is a dry finishing process. Instead of liquid paint, a fine powder — a mix of pigment and resin — is electrostatically sprayed onto the metal, which carries an electrical charge that makes the powder cling evenly to every surface. The coated part is then baked in an oven, where the powder melts and cures into a smooth, hard, continuous skin.

The result is a finish that’s noticeably tougher than conventional wet paint, with no runs, drips, or brush marks — and it’s applied with far less environmental waste, because overspray can be recovered and reused.

Powder coating vs wet paint: why it wins for laser-cut parts

For fabricated metal components, powder coating beats liquid paint on the things that matter most:

  • Durability — the cured coating resists chips, scratches, fading, and corrosion far better than wet paint.
  • Even coverage — the electrostatic process coats edges, folds, and complex laser-cut profiles evenly, including the intricate cut-outs common in decorative screens.
  • Consistency — colour and finish are repeatable batch to batch, which matters when parts have to match.
  • Cleaner process — no solvents and minimal waste make it the more sustainable choice.

For decorative screens, enclosures, brackets, signage, and outdoor hardware, powder coating is almost always the right call.

Finish options: gloss, satin, matte and texture

Powder coating isn’t one look — it’s a whole menu. The main choices:

Gloss level

  • Gloss — high shine, easy to clean, shows surface detail (and minor imperfections) clearly. Common for signage and consumer products.
  • Satin / semi-gloss — a softer sheen that hides minor surface marks. A popular all-rounder.
  • Matte — low-reflection, contemporary look. Increasingly specified for architectural and designer projects.

Texture

  • Smooth — the standard flat finish.
  • Textured / fine-texture — a subtle grain that hides surface imperfections and resists fingerprints, ideal for handled parts and enclosures.
  • Hammertone and special effects — decorative finishes for a premium look.

Colour

Powder is available across standard colour systems (such as the ranges architects and specifiers use day to day), so you can match a brand colour, a building’s palette, or an existing component. Metallic and specialty colours are available too.

Finishes for harsh and outdoor environments

If a part is destined for the coast, a pool surround, or constant weather exposure, the coating specification matters as much as the colour. Marine-grade and exterior-durable powder coating ranges are formulated to hold colour and resist corrosion in tougher conditions. For these jobs, it pays to confirm the environment up front so the right powder range is selected — a standard interior-grade finish won’t last in a salt-spray environment.

  • Cut clean, fold first. Sharp, clean laser-cut edges and folds completed before coating give the best, most even result.
